Before You Start Looking
Buying a horse is not like buying a car — it is a long-term commitment spanning twenty years or more. First confirm your readiness in terms of time, space, annual cost, and experience.
Define Your Requirements
Before any step, clearly establish:
- Purpose: Family leisure, professional training, racing, breeding?
- Your level: Beginner, intermediate, advanced?
- Budget: Purchase price + annual boarding, feed, and veterinary costs
Pre-Purchase Veterinary Examination
Never complete any deal without a thorough pre-purchase exam by a vet you choose yourself (not the seller's vet). The exam should include:
- General movement and physical condition check
- X-rays of hooves and joints
- Tendon and ligament examination
- Cardiac and respiratory assessment
What to Look for in a Listing
When browsing the marketplace, pay attention to:
- Breed and pedigree: For an Arabian horse this is particularly important
- Age: Horses between 7–15 years are the most suitable for new buyers
- Health records and vaccination history
- Training background: Has it been arena trained? Has it competed?
Negotiation and Legal Formalities
In Jordan, horse sale transactions are often conducted informally, but it is advisable to prepare a written contract that includes:
- The horse's name and description
- Date of birth and pedigree
- Sale price and payment method
- Any warranties provided by the seller
